I have teacher/professor friends who post a lot of lines from student papers on Facebook for laffs (believing, of course, that this will never get back to the student in question). Sometimes it’s just bad writing, but sometimes they do it explicitly to showcase their students’ horrible/misguided politics. As someone who would have been utterly humiliated to know their teacher was doing this, I have a real problem with it, and I will never ever do it. It feels like internet callout culture metastasizing into the classroom, which is supposed to be a space for, you know, learning and growing and broadening one’s mind, transcending the mistakes of childhood and the limitations of one’s upbringing. That professors and teachers would mock students for not entering the classroom with the “correct” views already in place (and for not already being excellent writers) really distresses me.
